In my work, “Reachable,” I challenge the pessimistic views sometimes held within the Christian community about the younger generation. I firmly believe that this generation has the potential to ignite a revival in Christian faith not seen since the times of the Great Awakening. Achieving this requires those experienced in the walk of faith to take bold steps. We must venture into our communities to genuinely listen to the desires and thoughts of the youth. Despite their tendency to select “none” when questioned about their religious affiliation, it does not indicate a lack of interest in Christianity. Below are five key practices that can nurture a deep, meaningful Christian identity among them:
Authenticity: You don’t need to be a biblical scholar or an expert on all things Jesus. It’s okay to acknowledge your struggles and admit when you don’t have all the answers. What’s important is your willingness to learn alongside the younger generation, sharing an honest path of discovery.
Daily Devotion: Encourage passionate engagement with the Bible, approaching it not merely as literature but as the living word of God. This engagement should be transformative, allowing scripture to penetrate deeply into one’s being. Establishing a daily routine for connecting with your faith helps anchor your identity in Christ and prepares you for the day ahead.
Community Engagement: Christianity was never meant to be a solitary journey. Despite the illusion of connection in today’s digital age, loneliness is rampant, particularly among the youth. Encourage forming bonds with a diverse range of individuals, not just those who mirror your own thoughts and appearance. True strength in faith comes from the rich tapestry of the Christian community, emphasizing support and a shared sense of belonging.
Servant Leadership: Answer the call to serve with kindness and compassion. Opportunities abound, from local volunteer work to global mission trips. Serving mirrors Jesus’s teachings and cements your identity in Christ through acts of love and humility.
Curiosity and Continuous Learning: Maintain a childlike sense of wonder about the faith. The quest for understanding should never stagnate. The Bible offers endless depths to explore, and God’s nature is fully revealed through Christ’s humanity. By seeking out mentors, engaging with diverse perspectives, and being open to learning, your foundation in Christ will strengthen, helping you navigate life’s challenges with faith.
Prayer: Develop a rich prayer life that touches every aspect of your life, encompassing personal needs, the well-being of others, and global concerns. Prayer invites God’s presence into your life, empowering you to act according to His will.
Conclusion: Building a Christian identity is an intentional journey. By incorporating these practices into your daily life, you can deepen your connection with God and live a life marked by authenticity and purpose.
